Making a Mark in Maine

I discovered the irrepressible Andrea Brand through Twitter sometime last year and when our trip to Maine finally materialized, I knew I had to seek her out and explore her Art Barn.

Located in Phippsburg, Maine on Sam Day Hill Road, just off 209 South, about one mile beyond the Phippsburg Fire Station. The barn is set back from the road in a beautiful sunny spot.

Andrea has curated a large array of work by emerging artists in the Phippsburg area. Photography, painting, sculpture and jewelry - there's something for everybody. It was a delicious treat to explore.

Andrea has amassed (and inherited!) a huge collection of sea glass:  her sculptures are beautiful and intriguing.

I worked my way toward the back of the barn, drawing to the gorgeous paintings arrayed on the rear wall.

These were the works of Ellie Barnet, born and raised in Maine with a degree in Painting from Boston University's College of Fine Art. She currently lives (and paints) in Maine.

Just beautiful - clearly the rustic Maine coast but with a modernist approach:

I did my best to capture a few photos in the dim light at the rear of the barn:

My work on display at TSB!

Check out Tompkins Square Bagels cafe -- my subway rider mounted prints are up on the wall near the entrance and a batch of subway paintings are hung in the rear dining area.

Single Fare Opening

The Single Fare 3 exhibit opened at RH Gallery in Tribeca last night -- it was jam packed with artists, collectors and art lovers. I grabbed this photo from the Single Fare 3 FB page:

People were spilling out onto the street in the cool drizzle of the evening.

There were over 2500 works submitted  - here are a few of my favorites - the roiling seascapes by Annie Wildey:

Found my own set of paintings on the western wall -- not so happy to see they posted my Empire State Building on its side. WTF? Same with the coffee cup. For god's sake............

Many artists submitted a unified series -- like these nude figures by Ingrid Cappozolli Flynn: 

Or this series of portions of a face -- just beautiful, by Alyssa Monks:

And these were really lovely, by Elizabeth Glaessner  -- they look like watercolors but I don't know how she prepped to cards to receive watercolor -- hmm, maybe gouache...........

Pitch By My Doorstep

Yes, three little birds..........

These little creatures are among the ten paintings I've submitted to the upcoming art exhibit, Single Fare 3 at the RH Gallery, 137 Duane Street in Manhattan. All works are painted upon, or created with, NYC Metro Cards -- yeah, right up my alley.

The exhibit opens on Wednesday, February 13, 6pm-9pm and runs through February 22, 2013.

My Paintings Share the Stage with a Bagel

The East Village has new addition -- the long-awaited Tompkins Square Bagels has finally opened on Avenue A. Filling a void left by the departure of David's Bagels last year, this new cafe has a strong commitment to the neighborhood and particularly to its artists.

Owner Chris Pugliese saw my art work online several months ago and asked me to exhibit my work during the first few months of the cafe's operation. The "soft" grand opening was this weekend and my daughter and I hung over 2 dozen of my pieces throughout the cafe. It's a warm and inviting place, sparkling clean and with a comprehensive menu -- and bagels made on site!

The art at TSB begins with a fantastic outdoor mosaic, created by none other than the EV's own Mosaic Man, Jim Powers --

When you enter the cafe,  you'll see several of my subway card paintings on the wall to your right.

Each has been framed under glass  - it  gives them a polished presentation, no?

To your left, a couple more are hanging right near the front window -- sorry about the glare on this photo, but you get the idea.

To the rear of the cafe, several more paintings are hung in the seating area.

The rear wall is a virtual portrait gallery of framed watercolors, all of whom were first introduced here on The Night Shift. I'm afraid I didn't take any close ups of these paintings but I didn't want to barge in between the bagel eaters.

The space housing Tompkins Square Bagels has been beautifully renovated -- a far more inviting place to have a nosh than David's Bagels ever was. It's a big win for the 'hood!

Come by for a look and a bite -- my work should be up for a couple months or longer. Tompkins Square Bagels is located at 164 Avenue A, between East 10th and East 11th Street, just a stone's throw from the park.
